Largest railway project started in Kazakhstan

The construction of the second track on the Dostyk - Moyinty railway section in Karaganda region started on Thursday, November 17, as part of Strong Regions — the Driver of Country's Development National Project.

The launch of the new 836 km railway line will contribute to uninterrupted exports of domestic products and increase the country's transit potential. During construction, 419 engineering structures (5 large bridges, 87 small and medium-sized bridges, 288 culverts, 14 road overpasses) as well as energy and communication facilities will be built. The construction is to be completed in the 4th quarter of 2025.

Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov participated in the launch ceremony via teleconference bridge.

In his speech, he noted that the strategically important project is implemented on the instruction of Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and is of great importance for development of transit-transport potential of the republic.

Thus, according to him, over the past five years the volume of transit container transportations in the country has increased 4.4 times; during 10 months of this year, cargo turnover in export direction has exceeded 74 billion ton-kilometers, which is 11% more than last year.

In this regard, a decision has been taken to implement a number of major infrastructure projects in the railway industry, which will significantly increase throughput capacity. Among them are the Dostyk - Moyinty, Bakhty - Ayagoz, Darbaza - Maktaaral lines, a bypass around Almaty and others.

"Today we are launching a major railway project. It will increase the capacity of the section by 5 times, from 12 to 60 pairs of trains, and will completely remove the issues of transportation of Kazakh exporters in this direction," Alikhan Smailov said.

The Prime Minister stressed that with the implementation of the project the share of local content will exceed 80%. In particular, production of sleepers, rails, transformers, supply of inert materials, sand and crushed stone will be carried out by local companies. In addition, some 3,700 people will be employed during construction and 500 people will get permanent jobs during the operation of the railway line.

"The cumulative effect from its implementation will provide an additional 4.1 trillion tenge increase in budget revenues over the next 20 years," Alikhan Smailov said when launching work on the new railway line.

The official ceremony was also attended by heads of central and local executive bodies, the Samruk-Kazyna Foundation, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, railway workers and industry veterans.
